Review: Asphyx - Deathhammer

What happens when a veteran and well-reputed band releases a new album? This question has several answers. Sometimes, the said band releases a bland, repetitive work. Others, it manages to reinvent itself with a 180 degrees turn, which may result in the full rejection by its audience or a growth that makes even the listener himself grow up. And, of course, we cannot forget the third possibility: bands that in a given moment found their identity and keep releasing albums that are consistent with this identity, never failing to convey excitement and passion for the music, even after many years of work. And, for the surprise of absolutely no one, this last album by Asphyx fits right into this category. Here we have a very traditionall death metal, similar to some moments of Dismember (specially in the rhythm section), with some very discrete doom influence here and there, such as in We Doom you to Death (it would be unavoidable with such a title) a bit of thrash, as in Of Days When Blades Turned Blunt, that features an intro that sounds as a downtuned Slayer, or even some bit of punk, as in the exciting title track, where  Martin Von Druunen's vocals are a show of their own. Finally, a great work for traditional death metal enthusiasts, who are able to appreciate all the influences of all faces of metal that shaped the genre.
