Review: Les Memoires Fall/Lúgubres - Split

Nothing better than getting started with the new year with some doom metal, right? And this is what we are doing in this first Monday of the post-apocalyptic world of 2013, introducing the debut work by these two bands from the state of São Paulo. The album is somewhat short (32 minutes), and it is started with Lúgubres, which treats us with a welcome surprise. Historically, epic doom is a style not much developed here in Brazil, and the band showcases right from the start to have all the potential to become a reference in this sub-genre in Brazilian lands. People into Solitude Aeturnus, Memento Mori, Doomsword and While Heaven Wept will feel at home with this material. Next we are introduced to Les Memoires Fall, from São José dos Campos, with their sound with a more gothic leaning, with a nice keyboard work and the shifting between raspy vocals and clean female vocals. I can't pinpoint exactly why, but they reminded me something of the old Eternal Sorrow. Finally, two bands that deserve attention, releasing a work that not only keeps alive the flame of good old doom metal, but also make clear that the style much more varied than its detractors use to claim!
