Review: Hatend - Unloading the Hate

Greetings, folks! After some silence, here we are again with another fruit from the file Brazilian grounds, more specifically, the Northeastern scene. This is Unloading the Hate, a work by the band Hatend, from Paulo Afonso, in Bahia. Here we have a gathering of the more diverse influences within the metallic paradigm. This is something notedly made by people who enjoy metal in itself, above and beyond secondary labels usually attached to it, which cause so much dissension in the underground scene. Thus, we have here a prevalence of death/thrash metal, but with melodic guitar interventions here and there, in a somewhat unexpected manner. Indeed, the song "Fire" unexpectedly manages to bring to mind Hammerheart-era Bathory, but this is just a temporary sensation.

In the end, this is not exactly a revolutionary play, but it is very interesting in its uncompromised manner to unite sub-genres under the great banner of  metal without sounding contradictory or ham-fisted. It is worthy each one's attention.

Saudações, pessoal! Depois de um certo silêncio, cá estamos novamente com mais uma obra do fértil cenário brasileiro, para ser mais específico, o cenário nordestino. Trata-se de Unloading the Hate, da banda Hatend, de Paulo Afonso, na Bahia. Temos aqui um belo apanhado de influências das mais diversas dentro do paradigma metálico. Algo perceptivelmente feito por pessoas que apreciam o metal, propriamente, acima dos rótulos secundários normalmente acoplados a ele e que tanto causam divisão no underground. Assim, temos aqui uma predominância do death/thrash metal, porém com intervenções melódicas das guitarras aqui e ali, de maneira um tanto inusitada. De fato, inesperadamente, a música "Fire" chega a lembrar um pouco o Bathory em Hammerheart, embora apenas temporariamente.

Enfim, não é um álbum exatamente revolucionário, mas é interessante, e muito, em sua forma descompromissada de unir sub-gêneros sob a grande bandeira do metal sem soar contraditório ou forçado. Vale a atenção de cada um.

Review: Soul's Silence - Act I: Sorrow

Doom metal. A genre that I can't get enough of listening, and I regret the fact that there are so few bands representing it in my city (much less ACTIVE bands). So, I'm overjoyed while listening and reviewing this work by the newcomers Soul's Silence. And as if the optimism generated by the band's mere existence were not enough, their material is also good. Here we have a great lesson on how to be faithful to a genre without falling on the snare of being too attached to its repetitive clichés. There is a noticeable influence of the 94-96 doom gothic crop, of bands as Evereve, Cemetary and Crematory in their respective early careers, in other words, slowness is not emphasized here, but heavy guitars interspersed with keyboard melodies and a rough vocal that brings to mind the more aggressive moments of Moonspell's Fernando Ribeiro. Finally, the recording is kind of muddy, though it dows not come to be something that difficults the listening, this is just something for the band to have an extra care in future efforts. But they have surely started with an excellent impression!

Doom metal. Um gênero que não me canso de ouvir e que lamento muito o fato de existirem tão poucas bandas representantes em minha cidade (e menos ainda bandas ATIVAS). Assim, é com muita alegria que ouço e analiso este material do novato Soul's Silence. E como se não bastasse o otimismo gerado pela mera existência da banda, o material ainda é bom. Temos aqui uma bela lição de como manter-se fiel a um gênero sem cair na armadilha de prender-se a seus clichês repetitivos. Há uma influência notável daquela safra doom/gothic de 94-96, como Evereve, Cemetary e Crematory em seus respectivos inícios de carreira, ou seja, a lentidão não é a tônica aqui, e sim guitarras pesadas intercaladas com melodias de teclados e um vocal áspero que me lembra os momentos mais agressivos de Fernando Ribeiro, do Moonspell. Por fim, a gravação é um tanto suja, embora não chegue a ser nada que prejudique a audição, apenas é um cuidado extra para a banda atentar em futuros trabalhos. Mas com certeza eles já começam com uma excelente impressão!

Review: Escarnium - Rex Verminorum

It is not a secret to anyone that I have always appreciated the metal from the northeastern region of Brazil, and that specially works coming from Bahia always have their place assured in my playlist. And it is alway great seeing bands from that region proving in very clear terms that its reputation as a breeding ground for quality metal is not merely a past glory, but something that stills alive to this day, as is proven by Escarnium, from Salvador, with a 7-tracks EP of an angry death metal to the tune of early Hypocrisy. Putrid vocals, low-ended guitars with fast phrasings allied to the heaviest of the riffs. The album's rhythm is something to be heard in a single shot, and the band even manages to accomplish the feath of having an epic-sounding song (the title track) and keeping its duration in mere 6:20. This is surely a band that will go far, and I hope this "far" includes São Paulo.

Não é segredo para ninguém que sempre tive uma enorme admiração pelo metal nordestino em geral, e que especialmente materiais oriundos da Bahia sempre têm lugar garantido na minha fila de audição. E é sempre bom ver bandas daquela região provando por A+B que sua reputação de um celeiro do metal de qualidade não é mera glória passada, mas continua viva até hoje, como nos prova aqui o Escarnium, de Salvador, com um EP de 7 faixas de um raivoso death metal aos moldes do Hypocrisy de início de carreira. Vocais podres, guitarras graves com fraseados velozes aliados a riffs pesadíssimos. O pique do play é de ouvir em um fôlego só, e consegue até mesmo realizar a proeza de ter uma faixa com sonoridade épica (a faixa título) e manter sua duração em meros 6:20. Essa é com certeza uma banda que vai longe, e espero que esse "longe" inclua São Paulo.

Review: Sakrah - Collider

And here we have the debut EP by Sakrah, from São Paulo, a band that has been earning its space in Brazil and in the world with a sound mixing something from And Justice for All-era Metallica with a bit of Pantera in Cowboys from Hell and something from the more rock/blues side of Black Sabbath, that is specially visible in the guitars. This is something very interesting and with a strong feeling, highlighting the two last tracks, Fight Bar and Whiskey Devil. The only problem is a bit of a feeling that they could have invested a little more in speed and maybe in a little longer EP (the five songs herein make up for mere 15 minutes!). Or maybe it was better this way. Perhaps longer songs would lose some of this spontaneousness of metal with a quite rocker identity (something that sometimes is lacking in some bands). Now I just want to see if the band puts up such a show over a stage.

Resenha: Sakrah - Collider

Aqui estamos com o EP de estréia do Sakrah, de São Paulo, banda que vem conquistando seu espaço no Brasil e no mundo com um som que mistura algo do Metallica de And Justice for All com um pouco de Pantera do Cowboys from Hell e algo do lado mais rock/blues do Black Sabbath, que aparece principalmente nas guitarras. É algo bem interessante e com uma pegada forte, com destaque para as duas faixas finais, Fight Bar e Whiskey Devil. Fica apenas um pouco da sensação que poderiam apostar um pouco mais na velocidade e talvez em um EP um pouco mais longo (as cinco músicas aqui contidas são finalizadas em 15 minutos!). Ou talvez seja melhor assim. Talvez músicas mais longas perdessem um pouco dessa espontaneidade de metal com identidade bem rockeira (algo que às vezes some nas bandas). Agora é ver se a banda faz bonito assim em cima de um palco.

Review: Puritan - Faixa de Gaza

Metalcore. The kind of sound that can really bring out a heatwave! Searing guitars tuned some tones down, clearly influenced by Pantera, Brujeria and Fear Factory, allied to angry vocals with something from Hatebreed and Biohazard. Their sound does not come to take the speed from thrash or death metal, but thanks to the long experience of the drummer Fábio Kiefer (former member of the veteran and now defunct and missed Trino) the band manages to imprint a high level of brutality to the use of breakdowns that can hardly be found in the average modern bands, which mates perfectly with the band's equally angry lyrical temathics, that approaches urband violence, social inequalities and their cause to effect relations. The highlights goes to the tracks "Faixa de Gaza", "A Covardia tem a Proteção da Lei", "Fornalha", "Tempestade de ódio" and "Cova Rasa".

Metalcore. O tipo de som que necessariamente faz você sentir calor! Guitarras ardidas afinadas alguns tons abaixo, com nítida influências de Pantera, Brujeria e Fear Factory, aliados a vocais raivosos com algo do Hatebreed e Biohazard. O som não chega a assumir a velocidade do thrash ou do death metal, mas graças à longa experiência do batera Fábio Kiefer (ex-integrante do veterano e hoje inoperante e saudoso Trino) consegue imprimir um grau de brutalidade ao uso de breakdowns que é difícil de encontrar na média das bandas mais modernas, o que casa perfeitamente com a igualmente raivosa temática lírica da banda, que trata de violência urbana, desigualdade social e suas relações de causa e efeito. Destaque para as faixas "Faixa de Gaza", "A Covardia tem a Proteção da Lei", "Fornalha", "Tempestade de ódio" e "Cova Rasa".
